Let's Talk Incontinence At Ableworld Southampton

This entry was posted in August 8, 2023

Previously we briefly discussed the basics of Incontinence care and how to develop methods of making it more manageable.

During this blog post we hope to open up a dialogue between our customers, those closest to them and our team at Ableworld Southampton. Recognising the taboo nature of incontinence is the first step to creating a more honest and open dialogue around the topic.

There are many factors that contribute to incontinence sometimes too many to cope with, that's why we should be able to talk about it with confidence. There are more solutions available to people who speak up about their problems then there is for those that don't.

Firstly, we would like to discuss the overlooked affects that incontinence may have on us, the physical effects are frequently talked about and rightly so. However, we believe the psychological effects are just as important.

An increasing amount of research shows people who deal with incontinence suffer from some type of mental health condition such as anxiety or depression. You may think that these are extreme and exaggerated effects but on the contrary.

Where does it begin?

People suffering from Incontinence do not wish to accept that they have the condition and therefore will not speak about it with their carer, loved one or practitioner. Even when some people seek help they do not admit the severity of their issue.

Anxiety

The passing of urine or faeces is regarded as a private and personal activity, many people would feel embarrassed by accidental leaks and the smell that comes with incontinence. It is therefore understandable why people would feel anxious about going out to public events, over time this can leave people feeling very isolated.

Depression

The isolation that someone may be experiencing through their incontinence could lead to depression. Everyone knows social interaction is vital to our mental health and just the mere interaction with a friend can put us in a good mood. However, when people start to believe things are hopeless and their incontinence issues are there to stay, they can be prone to depression.

If you feel like you have been experiencing these issues, we highly recommend you to seek help. For more information on how to look after your mental health click the link here.

We hope by creating a dialogue around incontinence, our customers will be able to discuss any issues around incontinence with confidence. Our staff here at the Southampton store are here to listen and help out as much as possible, this will ensure you go home with the correct product for you.
